How 7 days is counted

7 days is 1 week, an exact number of weeks — so the end date always falls on the same weekday you start from. Counting is inclusive of neither endpoint: day 1 is the day after your start date, and the 7th day is the answer. As a fixed example, 7 days after Thursday, January 1, 2026 is Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Seven days is exactly one week, so the date 7 days from today always falls on the same weekday as today. That property is what makes a week the default unit for short deadlines: a Tuesday deadline set a week out is still a Tuesday, with no calendar checking required.

Where the 7-day deadline shows up

One week is the shortest span most institutions will commit to in writing:

  • Retail: many electronics and opened-item returns run 7 days
  • Hotels and travel: free-cancellation windows commonly close 7 days out
  • Employment: a week’s notice is the statutory minimum in several jurisdictions for short service
  • Medicine: most short antibiotic courses run 7 days, and the instruction to finish the course matters more than feeling better on day 4
  • Software: weekly sprints, weekly billing trials, 7-day free trials

Because 7 divides evenly by 7, a one-week deadline never shifts weekday. That is not true of any other common span except 14, 21, 28 and 35 days.

Business days inside a week

Seven calendar days contain exactly 5 business days and one weekend, assuming a Monday-to-Friday week and no public holiday.

That 5-to-7 ratio is the basis of the most useful conversion in deadline planning: multiply business days by 1.4 to approximate calendar days. So "within 5 business days" is one calendar week, and "within 10 business days" is two.

The direction of the error matters. If a contract says 7 days and you assume business days, you will be two days late. Unless a document explicitly says business or working days, calendar days is the default reading and the safer assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 days from today the same weekday as today?

Yes. Seven days is exactly one week, so the end date always lands on the same day of the week as your start date. A deadline set 7 days from a Wednesday is a Wednesday.

How many business days are in 7 calendar days?

Five, assuming a Monday-to-Friday week with no public holiday. Seven calendar days always contain exactly one weekend, so you lose two days.

Does a 7-day return window include weekends?

Almost always yes. Retail return windows are counted in calendar days, so weekends count against you. The clock usually starts the day after delivery rather than the order date, which is what decides borderline cases.
