How Many Cups Are in a Gallon?

The answer

16 cups

In fluid ounces
128 fl oz
In quarts
4 quarts
In litres
3.785 L

How this is calculated

A US gallon is 128 fluid ounces and a US cup is 8 fluid ounces, so 128 ÷ 8 = 16 cups. The same answer falls out of the doubling ladder: 1 gallon = 4 quarts, each quart is 4 cups, and 4 × 4 = 16.

Sixteen cups make a US gallon. It is worth knowing in both directions — 16 cups up from the cup, and 128 fluid ounces down from the gallon — because the two forms answer different questions: how many glasses of water is a gallon, and how much does this recipe scale to.

The number holds only for the US gallon. An imperial gallon is 4.546 litres against the US gallon’s 3.785, so a British gallon is 20% more liquid even though it also divides into 16 imperial cups.

Gallon Man: the mnemonic that actually works

The standard classroom trick is to draw a big G, and inside it four Q shapes, two P shapes inside each Q, and two C shapes inside each P. Read it back and the whole system falls out:

  • 1 Gallon holds 4 Quarts
  • 1 Quart holds 2 Pints — so 8 pints to the gallon
  • 1 Pint holds 2 Cups — so 16 cups to the gallon
  • 1 Cup holds 8 fluid ounces — so 128 fluid ounces to the gallon

The reason it works is that every step is a doubling except gallon-to-quart, which is a quadrupling. Get 16 and 128 into memory and everything between them is a halving away.

Half gallons, quarter gallons and 5-gallon jugs

The fractions people actually use:

  • ½ gallon = 8 cups = 64 fl oz — the standard milk and juice carton
  • ¼ gallon = 4 cups = 32 fl oz — this is exactly one quart
  • ⅛ gallon = 2 cups = 16 fl oz — one pint
  • 2 gallons = 32 cups — a large punch bowl or drinks dispenser
  • 5 gallons = 80 cups = 640 fl oz — a water-cooler bottle or home-brew carboy

That last one is a useful sanity check when catering: a 5-gallon dispenser fills about 80 eight-ounce cups, or roughly 53 twelve-ounce cups.

Drinking a gallon of water a day

The "gallon a day" challenge means 16 eight-ounce cups, or 3.8 litres. Spread over 16 waking hours that is one cup an hour, which is the only way most people manage it.

For context, the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine suggests a total daily water intake of about 3.7 litres for men and 2.7 litres for women — but that figure includes water from food and all beverages, not just plain water, and food typically supplies about a fifth of it. So a gallon of drinking water on top of meals is above what the guidance implies for most people rather than a baseline.

Needs shift with body size, activity, heat and health conditions, and drinking far more than you need has its own risks. Treat 16 cups as the arithmetic answer to a challenge, not a target handed down by anyone’s guidelines.

US vs imperial gallons

The two gallons have different histories and different sizes. The US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches (3.785411784 L), inherited from the old English wine gallon. The imperial gallon was redefined in Britain in 1824 as the volume of 10 pounds of water, and is now fixed at exactly 4.54609 L.

The imperial gallon is therefore 20.1% larger. Both divide into 16 cups, so the cup count is identical while the volume is not — an imperial cup is 284.13 mL against the US cup’s 236.59 mL.

This catches people out beyond the kitchen. UK fuel-economy figures quoted in miles per gallon look about 20% better than US figures for the same car, purely because the gallon is bigger. Converting properly: 30 US mpg is 7.84 L/100 km, while 30 imperial mpg is 9.42 L/100 km.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cups are in a gallon?

Sixteen US cups. A gallon is 128 fluid ounces and a cup is 8, so 128 ÷ 8 = 16. A gallon is also 4 quarts or 8 pints.

How many cups are in a half gallon?

Eight cups, or 64 fluid ounces — which is also 2 quarts. That is the standard half-gallon milk or juice carton.

How many 8 oz glasses of water are in a gallon?

Sixteen. A gallon is 128 fluid ounces, so it fills 16 eight-ounce glasses. If your bottle is 16.9 fl oz (500 mL), a gallon is about 7.6 bottles.

How many cups are in 5 gallons?

Eighty cups, or 640 fluid ounces (18.93 litres). A 5-gallon water-cooler bottle therefore fills roughly 80 eight-ounce cups or 53 twelve-ounce cups.

Is a UK gallon the same as a US gallon?

No. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 litres and a US gallon is 3.785411784 litres, so the imperial gallon is about 20% larger. Both still divide into 16 cups, because the imperial cup (284.13 mL) is correspondingly bigger than the US cup (236.59 mL).

How many litres are in a gallon of water?

Exactly 3.785411784 litres for a US gallon — 3.785 L for practical purposes. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 litres.
